Reading floor lamps : faites le bon choix

A reading floor lamp offers precise lighting that illuminates every word without dazzling the whole room.

These lamps are essential for avid readers and fans of focused lighting. Their tall frame, typically between 120 and 180 cm high, lets you direct the light exactly where it’s needed without disturbing the rest of the space. Distinguished by an adjustable head—sometimes with a flexible arm or double joint—reading floor lamps are perfect for reading, working or relaxing. Most designs feature an integrated LED source or an E27/E14 socket, offering 5 to 12 watts (400 to 1000 lumens)—just right for reading without eye strain. Ideal placement includes next to an armchair or sofa, in a home office corner or as an addition to a bedroom setting.

What materials and styles are available for reading floor lamps?

Brushed steel: Favoured for its strength and contemporary look, brushed steel has a matte finish that resists fingerprints. These lamps usually weigh 3 to 6 kg for good stability, even with a long arm, and fit seamlessly into modern or industrial spaces.

Solid wood: For a warmer feel, reading lamps in solid wood (oak, beech, walnut) are chosen for their natural look and soft touch. Wooden models, often paired with a fabric shade, create a cosy and diffused light—ideal for inviting reading nooks. To browse more options, see our wooden floor lamps collection for styles to suit any home.

Glass and brass: Lamps with opal glass diffusers or brushed brass frames add a discreet touch of elegance. Opal glass gives an even light and reduces glare, making these models perfect for classic or art deco interiors.

Contemporary design: Sleek shapes, matte black or gold finishes and minimalist heads set design-led reading lamps apart. Some models include a touch dimmer or foot switch for adjusting brightness to suit any activity. For more inspiration, our designer floor lamps collection showcases contemporary creations with refined finishes.

What wattage and colour temperature should I choose for a reading lamp?

The right wattage and colour temperature depend on use and room setting. For comfortable reading, opt for a 6 to 9 watt LED bulb (40 to 60W halogen equivalent) providing 500 to 800 lumens. This is enough to light a book without tiring your eyes, even in a dim room.

The ideal colour temperature is 2700 to 3200 Kelvin: warm white light helps you relax and won’t disrupt your sleep rhythm. For desks or extended use, some prefer a neutral white (3500 to 4000K), which improves focus without making the space feel cold.

A reading floor lamp with a dimmer lets you adjust brightness throughout the day or to suit your activity. Some offer dual sources: one main light for the room and a directional reading lamp for close-up use. For those needing versatility, our LED floor lamps collection features models with dimmable and energy-saving options.

Where should I place a reading floor lamp and how to match it with your décor?

Place your reading floor lamp beside an armchair or sofa, 50 to 80 cm from your seat to avoid casting shadows. The lamp head should sit 110 to 130 cm from the floor, just behind your shoulder for direct light without blocking your view. In bedrooms, it can replace a bedside lamp—especially in small spaces where every inch counts.

For a coordinated look, choose a lamp finish that matches your room: black metal for a modern lounge, light wood for a Scandinavian vibe, or brass for vintage appeal. Dual lighting models are perfect for multifunctional living areas, switching easily from ambient lighting to a focused beam. Pair with ceiling lights or a touch bedside lamp to vary your lighting throughout the day.

The right reading floor lamp becomes a practical and stylish feature, transforming a simple reading corner into a true retreat while complementing your existing décor.
