Hat pendant lights : faites le bon choix

A hat pendant light brings a touch of elegance with its simple gesture, turning light into a signature feature.

The hat pendant is truly a statement piece in decorative lighting, blending bold lines with soft illumination. Its shape recalls the curve of a classic fedora or panama hat, with a wide, downward-sloping shade that channels light below while adding a sculptural presence. Available in minimalist versions with black lacquered metal or brushed brass, as well as textile or natural finishes, it suits every interior style. The hat pendant is known for its ability to define a space—ideal above a dining table, kitchen island or in a high-ceilinged hallway. Diameters typically range from 35 to 80 cm, covering spaces of 8 to 25 m² depending on the style. For main lighting, choose a bulb with 800 to 1600 lumens (8 to 15 W LED) and a colour temperature of 2700 to 3000 K for a warm, inviting atmosphere.

What materials are best for a premium hat pendant?

Metal: Models in lacquered steel, aluminium, or brass offer an impeccable finish with lasting durability. A 50 cm wide black matt metal hat pendant fits perfectly in contemporary or industrial interiors. Metal thickness (usually 1.5 to 2 mm) ensures strength and even light diffusion. For a touch of luxury, brushed or gold brass adds a sophisticated note—combine with dimmable LED bulbs to adjust the mood as needed.

Fabric: Hat pendants in fabric, cotton or linen filter light beautifully and soften the mood. A 60 cm version in natural linen on a metal frame emits a gentle glow, perfect for bedrooms or cosy living rooms. The fabric weight (180 to 250 g/m²) affects translucency: the thicker the material, the softer the light. For cleaning, simply dust with a feather duster or dry cloth to preserve the colour and texture.

Natural fibre: For an organic touch, hat pendants in rattan, bamboo or woven straw combine lightness and originality. A 45 cm rattan model hung 80 cm from the ceiling draws the eye in dining rooms or garden rooms. Natural fibres need regular dusting and should stay dry to prevent warping.

What is the right height for a hat pendant?

The height you hang a hat pendant affects both comfort and visual impact. Over a dining table, aim for 75 to 90 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade to avoid glare while keeping the view open. In a hallway or living room with a regular 2.5 m ceiling, hang at least 2.1 m from the floor. For tall spaces, lower the pendant to 2.4 m to boost its graphic effect.

Match the pendant’s diameter to the surface you’re lighting—choose a pendant that's one-third to half the table's width for balance. For a 180 cm table, a 60 cm diameter hat pendant is ideal. In open spaces, position several pendants at different heights to add rhythm and depth.

If you prefer something airier or more modular, the hat suspension light range is perfect for smaller spaces or layered arrangements.

How to select brightness and colour temperature?

The enveloping form of a hat pendant directs light downwards while minimising side glare. For general lighting in a 15 m² room, opt for an LED bulb of 12 to 15 W (equivalent to 100–120 W incandescent) offering 1200 to 1500 lumens. For softer light, use an 8 to 10 W bulb (800 to 1000 lumens) as accent lighting or in a bedroom.

The colour temperature will shape the mood: 2700 K for warm, intimate light, or 3000 K for a more neutral white. Dimmable models let you adjust intensity throughout the day. Check that your hat pendant fits E27 or E14 bulbs as specified. Some models take globe bulbs up to 12 cm across for added style.

In bedrooms, pair a hat pendant with our bedroom pendant lights to create a soft, cohesive look by mixing materials and sizes.

For fans of soft textiles, the fabric pendant lights collection is full of refined choices to filter light and bring a gentle atmosphere to any space.
