Natural fibre pendant lights : faites le bon choix

Natural fibre pendant lights offer the perfect balance between raw authenticity and contemporary elegance.

These pendants are now a top choice for those wanting to combine visual warmth, a gentle diffusion of light, and eco-friendly materials. Crafted from plant fibres such as raffia, hemp, jute, or sisal, natural fibre pendants come in a wide range of styles: large dome shades from 60 to 80 cm diameter for spacious rooms, compact cylindrical shapes (30 to 40 cm) for smaller spaces, or open-weave designs that cast beautiful shadow patterns. Natural fibre pendant lights work beautifully above a dining table, as a feature in a living room, or as a statement in a bedroom, adding an organic yet structured touch to your decor.

Which natural fibre should you choose for your pendant light?

Rattan pendant lights: Rattan is strong and lightweight, ideal for fine, airy weaves. A 50 cm rattan shade typically weighs less than 1.5 kg, making it easy to hang even on older ceilings. Untreated rattan has a honey-coloured hue that matures over time with natural light.

Bamboo pendant lights: Bamboo is more rigid, allowing for bold shapes and detailed openwork structures. For rooms of 15 to 20 m², a bamboo pendant light 40 to 60 cm in diameter, paired with a LED bulb of 800 to 1200 lumens (8 to 12 W), is a smart choice.

Jute or raffia pendant lights: These fibres give a more rustic look, perfect for boho or country chic spaces. Jute lights are often handwoven, showcasing charming irregularities. Pay attention to the weave thickness: the denser it is, the more softly diffused the light.

For the most natural effect, pair your pendant light with warm filament bulbs (2200 to 2700 K), enhancing the cosiness of the light and the texture of the fibres.

For a different take, the wicker pendant light is another authentic option, with lighter tones and finer weaves.

What is the ideal height to hang a natural fibre pendant light?

The ideal height depends on the room and the desired effect. Above a dining table, the bottom of the shade should be 80-90 cm above the table to avoid glare while ensuring even lighting. In a living room or bedroom, aim for 210 to 220 cm between the floor and the lowest point of the pendant to maintain clear sightlines and flow.

For high ceilings (over 2.8 m), go for an extra-large pendant (70 to 100 cm diameter) that brings structure without overwhelming the space. In hallways or entranceways, choose a compact option (25 to 35 cm) and hang it at least 220 cm from the floor to avoid bumps.

Natural fibre pendant lights blend seamlessly with Scandinavian, bohemian, or Mediterranean interiors. For complete harmony, team yours with a natural light fitting in the same room, varying heights and shapes to create visual rhythm.

How to choose the right size and brightness for your natural fibre pendant?

Diameter and light output should match the room size. For 10 to 15 m², a 40 to 50 cm diameter shade with a LED bulb of 1000 to 1500 lumens (10 to 15 W) provides comfortable main lighting. For spaces over 20 m², choose a 60 to 80 cm pendant or use multiple pendants to avoid dark corners.

In bedrooms, softer lighting is best: a 600 to 900 lumen (6 to 9 W) bulb is usually enough, especially with tightly woven pendants. For kitchens and dining areas, a colour temperature of 2700 to 3000 K offers a cosy yet practical light.

For coordinated style, the natural pendant light is the perfect match for a natural fibre pendant, especially in interiors where wood, stone, and raw textiles are featured.

If you want to play with material contrasts, pair a natural fibre pendant with a bamboo pendant light in another room for added texture while keeping an organic palette.

Natural fibre pendant lights are easy to care for: simply dust regularly with a feather duster or dry cloth. Avoid liquid cleaners as they can damage the fibre. For openwork designs, use a low-power air blower to reach the gaps without harming the weave.

Finally, for a cohesive look from floor to ceiling, coordinate your natural fibre pendant with a natural chandelier in adjoining spaces, extending the natural feel and soft light throughout your home.
