Oval lampshades : faites le bon choix

The light stretches, softens and finds balance in the perfect curve of an oval lampshade.

An oval lampshade offers an elegant solution for even light distribution, while adding a subtle graphic touch to your space. Its elongated shape, typically between 30 and 60 cm long and 15 to 30 cm wide, is ideal for both table lamps and floor lamps, as well as pendant lights—perfect for illuminating a rectangular table, a sideboard or a bedside table. This unusual format answers specific needs: it saves space while maximising the illuminated area, making it ideal for rooms where every centimetre matters. Oval lampshades come in a wide range of materials and finishes, from taut cotton and natural linen to contemporary polycarbonate and rich velvet, so they suit every style from classic to modern.

Which materials for an oval lampshade?

Fabric lampshades: Cotton, linen and polyester offer gentle, diffused light—ideal for creating a warm atmosphere. An oval fabric lampshade with a weight of 200-300 g/m² guarantees good shape and glare-free light. Natural linen styles are appreciated for their visible weave and slightly mottled appearance, perfect for minimal or Scandinavian interiors. Velvet versions, being thicker, bring a sophisticated touch and soften the light further, making them an excellent choice for cosy bedrooms or living rooms.

Paper lampshades: Lightweight and translucent, Japanese or washi paper creates a very airy oval lampshade with beautifully even light. However, their delicacy means they're best suited for lights that are not frequently handled, such as pendants or accent lamps.

Metal lampshades: For a more contemporary look, some oval lampshades feature aluminium or perforated brass structures. These choices play with shadow and light effects while offering excellent durability. Gold or matte black finishes work perfectly in modern or industrial interiors.

To explore more shapes and materials, the designer lampshades collection offers bold alternatives, from pleated to woven cane styles.

What size and wattage for an oval lampshade?

The right size for an oval lampshade depends on your room and lamp base. For a bedside lamp, a shade 30-35 cm long and 15-18 cm wide fits most standards and provides good reading light (E27 LED bulb 5-8 W, or 400-800 lumens). For a floor lamp, choose a 40-50 cm model to balance the look and provide effective light in a living room or dining area.

When suspended above a rectangular table, a 60 cm oval lampshade covers 120 to 160 cm of tabletop, with a recommended hanging height between 70 and 90 cm above the surface. For a 15-20 m² room, total light output of 1000-1500 lumens is advised, divided among your light sources. Dimmable LED-compatible models let you set the brightness to suit any mood.

For spaces where you want gentle lighting, like bedrooms, the bedroom lampshades collection features suitable sizes and soft-filtering fabrics.

How to style your décor with an oval lampshade?

Oval lampshades work with many designs when you choose the right finish. Beige or white linen fits perfectly with Scandinavian or minimalist themes, while deep blue or green velvet brings a hint of Art Deco style. Gold or matte black metal versions add a smart industrial or modern vibe. For a natural touch, wicker or woven rattan—though rarer in oval shapes—creates popular textured effects.

The colour affects the lighting: lighter shades (white, ivory, linen) maximise light diffusion, while dark ones focus light downward for a cosier cocoon feel. For perfect harmony, coordinate your oval lampshade with other textiles in the room (curtains, cushions) and match it to the lamp base.

If you want to coordinate your main lighting, the fabric floor lamps collection offers models compatible with oval shades, ideal for a cohesive look.

Care depends on the material: just dust fabric or paper shades with a microfibre duster, while metal can be cleaned with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive products and direct moisture, especially for paper or natural fibre styles.

To find more compact options for small spaces, the small lampshades collection offers models ideal for occasional tables and reading nooks.
