Paper lights : faites le bon choix

A paper light is the essence of lightness in lighting design.

Paper lights are a bold choice for those seeking gentle illumination, clean lines and versatility. Made from natural fibres or technical paper, they come as pendant lights, floor lamps, wall lights and table lamps. Sizes range from XXL 80 cm globes for striking centrepieces to small 20 cm lanterns ideal for bedside tables. The weight of the paper, usually between 60 and 120 gsm, affects how the light is diffused: the thinner the paper, the softer and more enveloping the glow. Paper lights suit every space, from a minimalist living room to a child’s bedroom, thanks to their ability to filter light for a gentle, glare-free atmosphere. For bulbs, choose LED options from 5 to 12 W (400–1000 lumens) to avoid overheating and ensure even, comfortable lighting. The ideal colour temperature is between 2700 and 3000 K for a cosy feel, though some designs accept adjustable bulbs to tailor the mood throughout the day.

Which type of paper light should you choose for your space?

Paper pendant lights: Perfect for rooms with a ceiling height of 2.5 to 3 m, paper pendants provide gentle general lighting. A 40 to 60 cm shade works well in spaces of 15–25 m². Japanese washi paper pendants are valued for their translucency and lasting quality. In dining rooms, hang a paper pendant 80 cm above the table to avoid glare while ensuring optimal light. Paper pendants suit both Scandinavian style and modern interiors. Paper pendant lights

Paper ceiling lights: Ideal for bedrooms or hallways, paper ceiling lights feature a flat silhouette and sit close to the ceiling (generally less than 25 cm high). They cast soft, even light and work well in rooms with low ceilings. Opt for 30–50 cm diameters for bedrooms of 10–15 m². Some are compatible with dimmable LED bulbs for adjustable brightness. Paper wall lights: For subtle accent lighting, paper wall lights are mounted at 1.6 m from the floor, beside the bed or in a hallway. They provide indirect light, perfect for passageways or reading corners. Pleated or origami paper options add a graphic effect and structure to your wall. Typically, paper wall lights feature a metal or wooden base for stability and safety. Paper wall lights

Paper floor lamps: Usually cylindrical or column-shaped, paper floor lamps are between 120 and 180 cm tall. Use them for ambient lighting in the living room or bedroom, next to an armchair or sofa. Their light structure makes them easy to move. For a soft setting, pick a model with a dimmer and an LED bulb of 8–15 W. Paper floor lamps

Paper lampshades: A paper lampshade turns a classic lamp into a diffuser of soft light. Available conical, cylindrical or pleated, in sizes from 20 to 40 cm to fit most table lamps and pendants. Fire-retardant paper is best for safety, especially with halogen or incandescent bulbs. Paper lampshades

How to choose the best paper light for every room

In a 20–30 m² living room, a paper pendant or ceiling light of 50–80 cm diameter with a 10–15 W LED bulb (800–1200 lumens) offers comfortable general lighting. For a bedroom, choose a paper lamp of 30–50 cm with a 5–8 W bulb (400–700 lumens) for a relaxing glow. In hallways and entrances, a 20–30 cm paper ceiling or wall light fitted at 2.1 m above the floor is enough, staying clear of head height. For children’s rooms, paper lights are popular for their lightweight build and lack of hard edges; make sure to pick certified toxin-free models, installed out of children’s reach. For damp areas such as bathrooms, choose a paper light rated IP44 or higher, though this material remains best suited to dry interiors.

Paper lights complement décor inspired by Japanese, Scandinavian or minimalist styles. They pair beautifully with pale wood furniture, natural textiles and neutral colours. To create a graphic feature, cluster paper pendants in different sizes and at varied heights, spacing each one 30–40 cm apart.

Care tips, safety and styling ideas

Paper lights need delicate care: dust regularly with an anti-static feather duster or dry cloth. Avoid any water or cleaning products as they can mark or weaken the material. Washi or fire-retardant papers resist deformation better, but always handle with care when changing bulbs or moving the fitting.

If marked, lightly dab the area with a white eraser or a dry microfiber cloth. To prolong the life of your paper light, keep it away from draughts and humidity, and use low-heat LED bulbs. Some models are dimmer-compatible so you can adjust the intensity to suit the mood.

For a harmonious look, combine a paper light with Scandinavian lighting or a Japanese pendant light to enhance a serene, pared-back atmosphere. With its simplicity and adaptability, a paper light is always a smart choice for soft, functional and contemporary ambience.
