Suspended floor lamps : faites le bon choix

A suspended floor lamp is the perfect balance between sculptural verticality and airy lightness.

This hybrid lighting solution sits between a classic pendant and a standing floor lamp, offering focused, often directional lighting while keeping the floor clear. This type of lamp fits beautifully into contemporary interiors as well as classic decors, thanks to the diverse choice of materials and finishes. Styles range from articulated arms and sweeping arches to tensioned wires and wireframe structures, with heights of 180 to 220 cm and arm reaches up to 120 cm. Suspended floor lamps are ideal for illuminating a dining table, reading corner or entertaining space without obstructing walkways.

Which materials and styles suit a suspended floor lamp?

Brushed steel: Perfect for an industrial or minimalist touch, brushed steel ensures durability and stability. Steel models often feature slim arms and geometric shades, making them a great match for modern homes. The strong structure also allows for powerful LED bulbs (up to 2000 lumens) while keeping an elegant, slender profile.

Natural wood: For a warmer atmosphere, a suspended floor lamp in wood (oak, ash, walnut) brings a natural accent. Light tones pair with Scandinavian trends, while dark woods suit vintage or rustic rooms. Wood bases are often combined with fabric or frosted glass shades for a soft, inviting glow.

Blown glass: Lamps with blown glass diffusers provide smooth and elegant light distribution. Opal or smoked glass plays with warmth (2700 to 3000 K for a cosy mood) and creates beautiful transparent effects. This makes them perfect for a refined living room or designer dining space.

For more premium options, the designer floor lamps collection offers sculptural pieces that complement your room's architecture.

What height should you install a suspended floor lamp?

The ideal installation height depends on the lamp's use and your room layout. For dining tables, position the diffuser 70–90 cm above the table, for a total height of 180–200 cm from the floor. In a reading corner, the light source should be at shoulder level (about 120–140 cm), with an adjustable arm to direct the brightness where you need it.

Recommended brightness varies by space size: for 10–15 m², use an LED bulb of 12–18 W (equivalent to 100–150 W halogen), delivering 1200–2000 lumens. For softer lighting, opt for an integrated dimmer or dimmable bulb. IP20 protection is enough for dry rooms; for bathrooms, choose an IP44-rated model.

For handy bedside lighting, see our bedside floor lamp collection, with compact, directional options for smaller spaces.

How to choose the right style and match your décor?

Sweeping arch: An arched suspended floor lamp, with a reach of 100–120 cm, lights a sofa or coffee table without ceiling installation. This style works well in spacious lounges and open-plan areas, and pairs beautifully with designer pendant lights for a play on volumes and perspectives.

Articulated arm: These versions offer great flexibility, perfect for reading nooks or workspaces where precise light direction is needed. An arm length of 60–90 cm allows easy adjustments without unbalancing the lamp.

Fabric shade: For a cosy feel, choose a suspended floor lamp with a fabric shade for gentle, even light. A diameter of 40–60 cm suits rooms of 15–20 m². Maintenance simply means regular dusting; some fabrics are antistatic to reduce dust buildup.

For perfect harmony in your lounge, pair your suspended floor lamp with coordinating living room floor lamps, mixing heights and materials for a layered look.

And for a striking statement, the arc floor lamp collection features spectacular models, perfect for zoning your space without adding partitions.
