Swimming pool lights : faites le bon choix

Lighting transforms your pool into a vibrant scene, revealing every detail in a new light.

Swimming pool lights are more than just accessories: they define the pool space, make the area safer, and enhance the water after sunset. Whether you need an underwater spotlight, a recessed light in the pool coping, or ambient lighting around the pool, every pool light must meet strict technical standards. Protection ratings (IP68 for underwater use, minimum IP65 for pool surrounds) ensure safety against moisture and splashes. Options include round spotlights from 18 to 30 cm in diameter, flat projectors 6 to 10 cm thick, and flexible LED strips to highlight the pool's edges. The colour temperature, typically between 3000K (warm white) and 6500K (cool white), sets the mood for relaxing, night swimming, or showing off contemporary pool design.

Which types of swimming pool light should you choose?

Underwater spotlights: These pool lights are installed in the pool wall or floor. Opt for LED models of 12 to 24 W, providing 1200 to 3000 lumens for pools of 30 to 50 m². Choose the right diameter (18, 25 or 30 cm) based on pool size and the look you want. Underwater spotlights should always be rated IP68 and made from stainless steel (316L) or reinforced ABS to withstand chlorine and salt.

Surface-mounted projectors: Perfect for renovations, these mount to the pool wall with no major drilling. An 18 W projector effectively lights up to 20 m². Some models offer RGB colour control for festive or relaxing atmospheres.

Perimeter lighting: To make the poolside safer, use adjustable outdoor spotlights or LED bollards rated IP65 to light the coping and poolside. Allow for 5 to 10 W per fitting, spaced 2 to 3 metres apart for even lighting.

What power and colour temperature for swimming pool lights?

The required power depends on pool size and desired effect. For an 8 x 4 m pool, use 2 or 3 spotlights of 18 to 24 W each, totalling 2500 to 4000 lumens for practical lighting. For a soft mood, a colour temperature of 3000 to 4000K is ideal; for a livelier or sportier feel, choose 6000 to 6500K. Perimeter LED strips, with 10 to 15 W per metre, highlight the pool's outline and are energy efficient. Make sure your lights are compatible with home automation systems or RGB remote controls if you want to change colours easily.

For natural pools or infinity pools, choose pool lights with diffuse light to avoid shadows and glare. Wide-beam models (120°) provide even coverage, while narrow beams (30° to 60°) spotlight features such as waterfalls or water walls.

How to coordinate swimming pool lights with outdoor lighting?

Choosing the right pool light ensures it complements the rest of your garden lighting. For a consistent look, match stainless steel, anthracite or white spotlights to your existing outdoor lights. Natural stone or timber copings suit slim-edged projectors, while modern pools look great with refined designs and RGB LEDs.

To extend your poolside ambience, add outdoor lanterns or solar bollards, which mark pathways without complex wiring. Timber or composite decking can accommodate recessed spotlights rated IP67, 6 to 10 cm in diameter, spaced 1.5 to 2 m apart for a modern look.

For overall harmony, match your pool light colour temperature to your LED outdoor lighting: warm white (3000K) creates a lounge feel, neutral white (4000K) is ideal for a contemporary finish.

To keep swimming pool lights bright, clean the lenses every 3 to 6 months to remove limescale and algae. Choose models with removable fronts for easy access, and check the seals each season to ensure they stay watertight.
