Vintage ceiling lights : faites le bon choix

A vintage ceiling light is the signature feature of an interior with character.

Vintage ceiling lights are the perfect choice for those who want to balance authenticity and practicality. Inspired by decorative styles of the 19th and early 20th centuries, these fittings stand out for their quality materials, refined finishes and evocative shapes—frosted glass bowls, patinated brass frames, floral and geometric patterns. You'll find them in both period flats and renovated country houses, bringing a warm, diffused glow while helping to structure the space. Sizes typically range from 25 to 50 cm across, making them suitable for anything from a hallway to a spacious lounge. For best results, a minimum ceiling height of 2.5 m is recommended for balanced proportions.

Which materials and finishes for a vintage ceiling light?

Glass ceiling lights: Opaline, frosted or etched glass remains a classic for vintage

Metal ceiling lights: Antiqued brass, bronze and wrought iron are common choices. Brass brings a sophisticated look with its natural patina and is easy to maintain with a soft cloth. Pierced metal fittings, sometimes with crystals, are a great choice for classic living rooms or bedrooms. Please note some solid metal vintage ceiling lights weigh over 3 kg, requiring suitable installation.

Fabric ceiling lights: Less common but highly sought after for their gentle, soft lighting, vintage ceiling lights with textile shades (linen, cotton, silk) create a cosy feel in bedrooms or offices. Choose a diameter of 35–45 cm for rooms from 12 to 18 m². Pale fabrics boost brightness, while ivory or pastel shades enhance the vintage charm.

How to choose the right power and size for your vintage ceiling light?

The first thing to consider is room size. For a hallway or corridor of 6–10 m², a model with a 25–30 cm diameter and an 8–10 W LED bulb (700–1000 lumens) suffices. For a lounge of 20–30 m², go for a vintage ceiling light of 40–50 cm diameter and two or three light sources totalling 20–30 W LED (2000–3000 lumens). Position it at 210 cm from the floor to avoid glare and ensure even lighting.

In a bathroom, check the protection rating: a vintage ceiling light with IP44 is required if within 60 cm of a water source. In bedrooms, a colour temperature of 2700 K creates a relaxing mood. Vintage ceiling lights with floral or geometric designs work beautifully in retro or bohemian interiors.

If you want something with even more historical flair, antique ceiling lights are distinguished by their neoclassical or empire-style ornamentation, often in gilt bronze or etched glass. Antique ceiling lights

Which styles and combinations suit vintage ceiling lights?

Vintage ceiling lights complement classic interiors as well as more eclectic homes. Pair them with decorative mouldings, wood panelling or traditional floorboards. For a period look, team with antique wall lights in brass or frosted glass to extend the aesthetic and multiply light sources. Antique wall lights

In a contemporary room, a vintage ceiling light can provide a bold contrast, especially in a simple finish such as white glass or brushed brass. For even more character, rustic ceiling lights in wrought iron or carved wood evoke the spirit of country homes. Rustic ceiling lights
