Wired wall lights : faites le bon choix

An exposed cable and controlled light: wired wall lights combine technical style with precise illumination.

Wired wall lights are the perfect solution for structuring your lighting without the need for recessed installation. Their visible cable, sometimes textile, sometimes sheathed in metal, becomes a decorative feature in its own right. Formats vary: adjustable arms from 30 to 80 cm, linear or twisted cables, tilting or fixed shades. These wall lights are just as suitable for a narrow hallway as for bedside lighting, a home office or a living room, offering unmatched installation flexibility. Surface mounting lets you tailor the height and direction of light exactly as needed, while keeping access simple to your existing power supply.

Which materials and finishes for a wired wall light?

Lacquered steel: Steel, often lacquered in black, white or gold, ensures strength and stability. A 40 cm steel arm easily supports a 1 to 2 kg shade. A matt finish hides fingerprints, while gloss puts the cable’s graphic look centre stage.

Braided textile: The textile cable, 6 to 8 mm in diameter, adds warmth and allows for a range of colours (natural linen, dark grey, brick red). It pairs perfectly with a fabric wall light to soften a bedroom or reading nook.

Blown glass: An opal or clear glass shade, 12 to 25 cm in diameter, diffuses light evenly. Choose frosted glass to avoid glare in walkways. Pairing with a black cable creates a stylish contrast, ideal for modern interiors.

Solid wood: For a Nordic or rustic touch, a 2 to 3 cm thick oak or walnut base adds warmth. Combine with a wooden wall light for material harmony in a living room or hallway.

How to choose the right wattage and installation height?

The required wattage depends on what you want your wired wall light to do. For accent lighting in a hallway, a 4 to 6 W LED bulb (400 to 600 lumens) is sufficient. Over a bed or desk, opt for 7 to 10 W (700 to 1000 lumens) for ideal comfort. A colour temperature of 2700 K (warm white) to 3000 K (neutral white) helps keep the room’s mood soft.

Mounting height depends on use: 120 to 140 cm from the floor for pathway lighting, 90 to 110 cm for bedside reading, 160 to 180 cm for a decorative effect. Make sure the cable does not block pathways or sockets. In bathrooms, choose at least an IP44 rating for water resistance, as with any bathroom wall light.

In larger rooms, use multiple light points: a wired wall light every 2.5 to 3 metres ensures even distribution with no dark patches. In a workspace, angle the shade towards the worktop to reduce visual fatigue.

Coordinating the wired wall light with the rest of your decor

The exposed cable allows for creative detailing: let it run in clean lines or curves, and secure with metal clips or wooden brackets to create a personalised pattern. Pair a wired wall light with a matching wired ceiling light for a unified look.

For an industrial look, choose raw metal finishes, a black cable and exposed filament bulb. Minimalist interiors call for a white or transparent cable and an opal glass shade. Scandinavian styling favours pale grey textile cables and light woods.

Maintenance is easy: dust the cable and shade regularly with a dry cloth. For glass models, monthly cleaning with warm water and mild soap keeps them clear. Avoid abrasive cleaners on lacquered or wooden parts.

Finally, a wired wall light is ideal in a mixed wall arrangement, alongside designer wall lights to add rhythm to a large wall or highlight a bookcase.
