Fabric lamp shades for living rooms : faites le bon choix

A fabric lamp shade for the living room sets the tone as soon as you enter the space.

This shade shapes the light, sets the mood and defines the style of your living area. Choose from cylindrical, conical or drum shapes, with diameters from 30 to 60 cm for table lamps and up to 80 cm for main overhead fittings. Its main role is to diffuse a soft, even light without glare while disguising the bulb. The right lamp shade can turn a simple bulb into a decorative focal point while controlling how the light is spread (typically between 800 and 2000 lumens depending on the shade and bulb strength). Fabric, paper, rattan or metal shades all offer their own style and effect, suited for tasks like reading, relaxing or hosting guests.

What materials for a living room lamp shade?

Fabric lamp shades: Fabric (cotton, linen, velvet) is the classic choice for a living room. It filters the light, prevents harsh shadows and can be cleaned easily with a vacuum or gentle brush. A linen shade 40 cm across creates a warm glow (2700-3000K) perfect for cosy evenings. Thick fabrics suit more muted settings, while finer weaves let more light through.

Rattan lamp shades: Handwoven rattan brings a natural, handcrafted touch, casting graphic shadows across your walls while letting air flow around the bulb. A 50 cm rattan shade fits perfectly in boho or Scandinavian-inspired interiors. For more options, the rattan lamp shade collection has styles for every natural décor.

Paper lamp shades: Lightweight, budget-friendly and easy to fit, paper spreads an extra-soft light with no hot spots. Ideal for creating a softly lit atmosphere. Be careful with bulb power: do not exceed 40W to avoid overheating. Japanese or pleated designs feel distinctly modern.

Metal lamp shades: Rarer in the lounge, metal shades direct light upwards or downwards—perfect for a reading corner or coffee table. They wipe clean and resist knocks. A matt finish reduces glare.

How to choose the size and brightness of your living room lamp shade?

Diameter depends on the area and the fitting. For a table lamp on a sideboard, a 30-40 cm shade is enough. For a floor lamp, choose 45-60 cm to balance the proportions. For an overhead pendant, go for 60-80 cm in a 20-30 sqm room. As a rule, the shade should be about a third of the lamp's total height.

As for power, a LED bulb of 10-15W (75-100W equivalent) typically gives 1000-1500 lumens, ideal for most lounges. For a cosier feel, use around 800 lumens. The best colour temperature is 2700 to 3000K for warm light. For large floor lamps, see the floor lamp shade collection for bigger formats and higher wattages.

Shade height also affects the lighting: a hanging shade should sit 180-200 cm above the floor so it's out of the way, while floor lamp shades should place the bulb at seated eye level (about 120-140 cm).

What styles and pairings for living room lamp shades?

Black lamp shades: For a bold look or a sophisticated mood, black absorbs light and creates focused pools. Perfect with modern or industrial spaces. A 40 cm shade on a table lamp highlights a marble table or leather sofa. Explore matt, satin or textured options in the black lamp shade collection.

White lamp shades: Always on trend, white maximises brightness and works in any décor. Great for darker rooms. A 50 cm white shade on a main pendant gives even light in a 25 sqm lounge. Discover all versions in fabric, linen or synthetic in our white lamp shade collection.

Wicker lamp shades: Wicker is more flexible than rattan and makes for intricate patterns and organic shapes. It pairs well with linen cushions or a Moroccan-style rug. For a cohesive natural scheme, see the wicker lamp shade collection for a variety of textures and colours.

For easy care, pick living room lamp shades with smooth or washable surfaces—removable fabric ones can go in the wash at 30°C, and rattan or wicker can be cleaned with a low-power vacuum. Always check the bulb fitting (E27 or E14) and the maximum wattage listed on the product details for safe use.
