Table lamps : faites le bon choix

Targeted supplementary lighting exactly where you need it most.

The table lamp is an essential partner for shaping the mood in any space, whether it's for your desk, a reading nook or a bedside table. Compact and portable, table lamps come in a wide range of designs and sizes, from minimalist metal models just 25 cm tall to sculptural statement pieces up to 60 cm, including versions with fabric or hand-blown glass shades. Their main purpose is to provide focused light—usually between 300 and 800 lumens—ideal for reading, working or creating a soft atmosphere without glare. What sets

Which material is best for a table lamp?

Metal table lamps: Chosen for their durability and easy care, they offer a modern or industrial look depending on the finish (chrome, brushed brass, matt black). A 35 cm metal lamp with a 6 to 9 W LED bulb gives bright, direct light, perfect for desks or bookshelves. Adjustable versions allow you to direct the light with precision.

Glass table lamps: Opal or blown glass diffuses the light for a soft glow without harsh shadows. Opt for a bulb with a colour temperature between 2700 and 3000 K for a warm effect. Glass lamps, often between 20 and 40 cm wide, are perfect in elegant bedrooms or living rooms. For more options in this material, the glass lighting collection has further inspiration.

Wooden table lamps: Perfect for Scandinavian or natural looks, these bring a warm, authentic touch. Pale woods like oak or birch suit bright interiors best. A solid wood model 30 to 45 cm high, paired with a linen shade, casts a soft light that's ideal for living spaces or children's rooms.

Ceramic table lamps: Glazed ceramic allows for original shapes and rich colours. They're easy to clean with a soft cloth and work well with low-powered LED bulbs (4 to 6 W) for ambient lighting.

What size and brightness for every use?

Choosing a table lamp depends on the room and how you plan to use it. For a desk, go for a lamp 40 to 50 cm high and 600 to 800 lumens (8 to 10 W LED) for effective lighting without eye strain. Adjustable or articulated models are best for focusing on your workspace. For the bedside, a lamp 25 to 35 cm tall fitted with a 3 to 5 W bulb (300 to 400 lumens) will give a gentle, relaxing glow. Dimmable lamps let you tailor the brightness throughout the day.

In a living room, a table lamp becomes a true decorative feature. Choose one 50 to 60 cm tall to style a console or side table, giving shape to your layout and enhancing general lighting. For a cosy ambiance, go for a 2700 K colour temperature and a diffusing shade. Dual-source table lamps (with both direct and indirect light) are great for layering effects.

How do you coordinate your table lamp with the rest of your décor?

The style and finish of your table lamp should complement your furnishings. In contemporary rooms, opt for clean lines, matt or chrome finishes, and materials like metal or glass. For vintage spaces, aged brass, coloured ceramics or textured glass work best. Table lamps with pleated or natural fabric shades pair beautifully with linen curtains or textured cushions.

For a harmonious look in the bedroom, match your table lamp to a bedside lamp in a similar style, or mix contrasting materials. In the living room, create cohesion by echoing a coordinated floor lamp, establishing a consistent lighting theme across the space.

Caring for your lamp depends on its material: use a microfibre cloth for metal, regularly vacuum a fabric shade with a soft brush, and choose specialist antistatic cleaner for glass to avoid marks. Always check bulb compatibility (E14 or E27) and stick to the maximum wattage advised by the manufacturer.
