Coloured pendant lights : faites le bon choix

A cascade of colours suspended in mid-air brings a bold statement to your interior.

Coloured pendant lights take centre stage, adding rhythm to your space and defining its lighting layout. Available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, from compact 20 cm globes ideal for a reading nook to XXL designs over 60 cm for dining tables, a coloured pendant is much more than a decorative accessory: it shapes the atmosphere, highlights specific areas and sets the tone for the whole room. Choose from glossy, matt or satin finishes, and explore materials like metal, glass or fabric, each bringing unique visual and tactile effects. For performance, select based on light output: 800 to 1200 lumens is perfect for dining areas, while 400 to 600 lumens are enough for hallways. As for colour temperature, opt for 2700 to 3000 K for warm, cosy light, or 4000 K for a more energising effect.

Which materials and finishes for coloured pendant lighting?

Metal pendant lights: Durable and low maintenance, these lights deliver bold hues and sharp reflections. Powder-coated or lacquered metal versions come in rich colours from teal blue to mustard yellow. Simply wipe with a microfibre cloth to keep the colour shining. Metal pendants are especially suited to kitchens and high-traffic areas, where resistance to knocks and moisture is essential.

Glass pendant lights: Glass adds a translucent, luminous dimension to colour. Coloured blown glass models diffuse a soft glow, perfect for bedrooms or living rooms. As glass is more fragile, select models over 30 cm in diameter to avoid overly focused spots. Clean with lukewarm water and a gentle soap for best results.

Fabric pendant lights: Fabric brings a softer, more muted look. Coloured fabric pendants filter the light and create a cocooning mood, perfect for relaxation areas such as bedrooms or reading corners. Go for dust-repellent fabrics to keep maintenance simple—a quick regular dusting is all that’s needed.

Which coloured pendant light for each room?

Your choice depends on room size, ceiling height and function. In the kitchen, a 25–35 cm diameter pendant hung 80–90 cm above the worktop delivers focused lighting without glare. For dining rooms, choose 40–60 cm wide pendants, positioned 70–75 cm above the table: bold colours draw the eye and define the zone. In large living rooms, cluster several coloured pendants together or pick an XXL style for a sculptural statement effect.

For bedrooms, softer shades like pastel blue, sage green or blush pink with gentle, dimmed lighting (8–12 W LED, or 700–1000 lumens) create a relaxing feel. For hallways and corridors, compact coloured pendants (20–25 cm diameter) suffice, installed 2.1m above the floor to keep pathways clear.

For perfect harmony, pair your coloured pendant light with white pendant lights or black pendant lights to play with contrasts and enhance your décor’s structure.

How to match your coloured pendant light to your interior style?

Scandinavian pendants: Choose pastel colours and clean, simple shapes. Painted wood or matt metal is ideal for Nordic-style spaces. Diameters of 30–40 cm suit rooms of 10–15 m².

Industrial pendants: Go for bold shades (red, yellow, blue) in geometric shapes or raw materials. Industrial coloured pendants are perfect with metal or dark wood furniture, or line several above a kitchen island or high table to complete a loft look.

Vintage pendants: Mustard yellow, olive green or petrol blue bring mid-century inspiration. Favour glass or enamelled metal designs with filament bulbs for vintage character.

For a softer touch, a pink pendant light is ideal for bedrooms or kids’ spaces, while a blue pendant light brings freshness and depth to offices or entryways.

For best results, dust your pendant light regularly with an anti-static duster. Glass and metal models stay vibrant with a monthly wipe using a soft cloth and the right cleaner. Avoid abrasive products that might dull the finish.
