Outdoor lights : faites le bon choix

As night falls, outdoor lighting becomes the anchor of your open-air space.

Outdoor lights are more than just an accessory: they structure your patio, secure pathways and highlight every corner of the garden. Whether you need to light a pathway, illuminate a dining area or accentuate a facade, choosing the right model depends on technical requirements. Styles include bollard lights from 40 to 120 cm high, compact outdoor wall lights (typically 20 to 35 cm wide), outdoor floor lamps up to 180 cm, and recessed ground spotlights from 6 to 12 cm in diameter. The protection rating (IP) is key: choose at least IP44 for a covered terrace, IP65 for exposed areas, and IP67 for poolside use. Colour temperature, measured in Kelvin, shapes the mood: 2700K for warm lighting, 4000K for a more neutral feel, 6000K for bright, security-focused white light.

Which types of outdoor lights for which uses?

Outdoor wall lights: perfect for lighting an entrance or accentuating a facade, available in classic or contemporary designs, with or without motion sensors. Opt for an 8 to 15W LED (700 to 1200 lumens) for effective welcome lighting. Adjustable versions allow you to direct the light exactly where you need it. Discover all options in the outdoor wall lights collection.

Outdoor spotlights: recessed or spike-mounted, ideal for illuminating paths, highlighting plant beds or securing outside stairs. A 5W LED spotlight (400 lumens) is enough for marking out, while floodlights of 15 to 30W (1200 to 2500 lumens) effectively light large areas. The beam angle (usually 30° to 120°) determines the spread of light. For tailored solutions, see the outdoor spotlights collection.

Outdoor floor lamps: ideal for structuring a terrace or creating a central focal point, with heights from 120 to 180 cm and outputs of 10 to 20W LED (800 to 1600 lumens). Some models have dimmers or dusk sensors. Treated metal or aluminium versions offer greater weather resistance. For a wide selection, browse the outdoor floor lamps range.

Outdoor lanterns: a blend of traditional style and durability, often made of cast aluminium or galvanised steel, with heights from 40 to 100 cm. Their toughened glass protects the bulb from impacts and water. For a cosy touch, choose a filament LED bulb of 4 to 8W (300 to 700 lumens). Explore a variety of styles in the outdoor lanterns collection.

Outdoor solar lights: fully self-contained and easy to install with no wiring. The solar panel charges an integrated battery, supplying up to 6 to 12 hours' autonomy depending on capacity (typically 1200 to 2400 mAh). Great for illuminating paths or spotlighting plants, available as stake, hanging or table lights. Find every option on the outdoor solar lights page.

What brightness and colour temperature do you need for outdoor lighting?

Brightness depends on the area and purpose. For marking a path, 100 to 200 lumens per light is enough. For a front door or gate, aim for 400 to 800 lumens. An al fresco dining space needs 1000 to 1500 lumens from multiple sources to prevent glare. Security floodlights can reach 2000 to 3000 lumens for larger areas. Colour temperature sets the mood: 2700K to 3000K for a warm and welcoming look, 4000K for a natural effect, 6000K for bright, practical white light. LED outdoor lights offer excellent energy efficiency (up to 100 lm/W) and a lifetime of over 25,000 hours.

For a 15 m² terrace, use two or three lights of 400 to 600 lumens each, positioned at 180 to 220 cm for wall lights or 120 cm for bollards. Space ground spotlights every 1.5 to 2 metres along a path. For outdoor dining, choose a pendant light centred 80-100 cm above the table, or place a floor lamp close by.

Materials and care: what to choose for durability?

Aluminium: lightweight and rustproof, ideal for all weather, needing only an annual rinse. Powder-coated models offer extra protection against corrosion.

Stainless steel: perfect for coastal or damp areas, resists salt and temperature changes. Wipe regularly to prevent limescale marks.

Technical plastic: used for solar lights or budget-friendly bollards, it will not rust but may discolour in UV light. Choose anti-UV treated versions for longer lasting colour.

Toughened glass: protects bulbs from impacts and splashes. A simple wipe keeps it clear.

To ensure your outdoor lighting lasts, regularly check seal integrity and dust any vents. Replace bulbs only with LED models rated IP44 or IP65 to avoid moisture damage.
