Tube lights come in aluminium, brass, steel or glass, with matte, brushed or chrome finishes. Diameters typically range from 2 to 10 cm, lengths from 20 to 150 cm, and power from 5 to 40 W with LED or halogen technology. Tube lights provide directional or diffused lighting, ideal for highlighting worktops, hallways or dining tables. They blend seamlessly into minimalist, industrial or Scandinavian settings.

Which shapes and materials for a tube light?

Aluminium: Lightweight and durable, brushed or anodised aluminium gives a modern look and excellent heat dissipation. Aluminium tube lights often come in lengths of 60 to 120 cm, ideal for larger rooms or offices. Their matte surface resists fingerprints and is easy to care for.

Glass: Opal glass tubes diffuse a soft, even light without glare, perfect for relaxing spaces or bedrooms. Clear glass tubes offer a more graphic look with striking light effects—an 80 cm tube with a 6 cm diameter will light a 180 cm table efficiently.

How to choose the power and installation height for tube lights?

The right power depends on the intended use. For general lighting in a 20 m² living room, aim for a total brightness of 2,000 to 3,000 lumens—typically 2 to 3 LED tubes of 10 to 15 W each. For accent lighting or in hallways, a 5 to 8 W tube is enough to mark the way gently.

Installation height varies by function. When suspending above a table, the bottom of the tube should sit 80–90 cm above the tabletop to prevent glare. For ceiling fittings, install a 30–60 cm long tube at 2.4 m above the floor for comfortable, even lighting. For a linear or graphic effect, space tubes 40–60 cm apart, depending on their diameter.

In a kitchen, position your tube light about 60 cm above the worktop for precise task lighting. For wet areas, always check for IP44 rating or higher.

What styles and combinations work with tube lights?

Tube lights suit many styles. Matte black versions emphasise minimalist or industrial design, while gold brass adds a touch of chic to living rooms or hallways. White or chrome-finished tubes are perfect for bright, contemporary spaces.

For a Scandinavian mood, choose light wood or white metal tubes with simple pendant lights. Glass designs are ideal for bathrooms or bedrooms where gentle lighting is key.

In a narrow hallway, arrange tube lights in a row to draw the eye and enhance the space. For dining rooms, select a 100–120 cm long tube for a 200 cm table, ensuring a 3,000 K colour temperature for a warm atmosphere.
